UN Resident Coordinator Ad-interim's Message on 2022 Independence Day
Statement by UN Resident Coordinator a.i. on Papua New Guinea's Independence Day.
On behalf of the United Nations family, I wish all Papua New Guineans a very happy Independence Anniversary. Papua New Guinea (PNG) became self-governing on 1 December 1973 which led to achieving independence on 16 September 1975. PNG then joined the United Nations (UN) on 10 October 1975.
This month, as we mourn the passing of PNG’s Head of State, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, it is fitting that we reflect on what has been achieved by this young nation while acknowledging the challenges that lie ahead. Much has been gained since independence in 1975 including longer lifespans for Papua New Guineans and better human development outcomes - as much as 50% improvement in three decades.
The past two years of COVID have also shown how vulnerable PNG can be to external and unforeseen shocks. PNG is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse nations in the world. It is also one of the most biodiverse nations on earth with the third largest expanse of natural forest globally, an essential protection against the destabilizing ravages of climate change. It is resource rich and holds great potential for a green economy to be unleashed and fully utilized for inclusive and sustainable economic growth. we trust the new government to ably shepherd PNG through the landmark 50th anniversary of the nation’s founding. It is a great responsibility and at the same time, a great opportunity to further its investments toward achieving even higher human development outcomes. This, together with sustainable investments in economic growth will improve PNG’s resilience to external and domestic pressures that will have far reaching impacts on the lives of all Papua New Guineas
As PNG continues to foster growth, the United Nations is committed to working with the Government of PNG to ensure that all citizens benefit equally from the opportunities that lie ahead. Together with our development partners, civil society, private sector and the amazing people of PNG, the United Nations family will continue to support the development efforts needed to achieve the ambitious goals outlined in Vision 2050, the mid-term development plans in alignment with the achievement of the global Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Let us work together to realize our shared vision of a peaceful and prosperous Papua New Guinea.
On behalf of the United Nations Secretary-General and the UN family in Papua New Guinea, I wish you a happy Independence Day Celebrations.
