- UN Resident Coordinator in Papua New Guinea Mr. Gianluca Rampolla stated “On the 4th of September, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights commented on the situation in the Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Papua, she expressed concern over the escalation of violence, and stressed that there is no place for violence.
Port Moresby - The High Commissioner encouraged all sides to engage in meaningful dialogue over grievances and aspirations and ultimately called on authorities to ensure that human rights defenders, journalists and students be protected.
There was a discussion on Thursday 5th September, in the PNG National Parliament on the potential impact of the escalation of tensions in the Indonesian Provinces of Papua and West Papua, on Papua New Guinea, and there was a call on the Government to ensure that plans are in place to address potential humanitarian and security implications related to the escalation of violence across the border.
The United Nations in PNG are working in support of Government, as we have done in the past for other emergencies, to prepare contingency plans so as to be able to deal with any potential humanitarian consequences of the escalating situation”.
